Do-Nut

Whilst waiting to move C from his present group home I have been having C home more. In the last couple of years he has been more receptive to going to new places which is fantastic. So in a bid to try and wear him out (he doesn’t sleep much) we have been trying new things. But i only seem to wear myself out! The latest was Do-nutting (as we are not bound by risk assessments!).

Here’s a short video clip to illustrate what it is...

video

Trying to get C to sit in a Do-nut was a feat in its self – and took some practice!

After I had manoeuvred C into positive and then got myself seated my do-nut – I looked up and C was gone! You’re supposed to wait till everyone is ready and then all go together! I had to run down the side of the slope to catch him up as I knew he wouldn’t know what to do at the bottom and wasn’t sure how he would respond to a member of staff talking to him. I only managed to beat him down the slope as he was using his size 10’s as breaks!!
That was the only mishap.
C needed a bit of time out after that in the furthest corner.

This time he held on till i was ready.

Great fun! The aches and pains the next day were worth it!
We are top middle on way down

Over the last 20 years I don’t know how many letters/emails/phone calls of complaint I have made advocating on C’s behalf. I try and make them constructive and have had some very positive outcomes not just for C but for others to. I have changed attitudes and some policies.

But it can be very wearing. Having a good social worker on your side supporting you can make a lot of difference. I have been very fortunate with my social workers (on the whole). Social services tend get a bad press, and yet many work tirelessly. As well as complaining I also think it is important to give praise where praise is due. So when I saw Health and Social Care Professional of the Year Award were looking for nominations – I nominated my social worker. My nomination has been accepted and we both have been asked to attend the award ceremony next month. In the mean time they are sending a film crew to film both my social worker and I and possibly C?!

I think C must have had a good time donutting after the first initial shock of it. It seems to me like something he would really like to do and that it would open up his senses.

Congratulations on getting the nomination for your social worker. Now we just hope for the best, don't we? I hope it all has a very happy ending.

Thanks for the lovely update. It was good to hear from you and about C's latest adventures.

Oh wow, that looks like so much fun!!!! But before I sprint off to search "do-nutting new york city," I just want to say I'm glad you're having fun with C and that he's trying new things. I'm glad it worked out well.

Congratulations on getting your social worker nominated, too! And congratulations on finding another platform for your advocacy!

That looks like fun! We don't have that here as far as I know but if they did I think my son would love it! Sounds like you and C had a good time.

That's so great of you nominating someone for doing a great job. We hear so much about all the bad things people do and it's nice to hear about someone who has helped you so much that you wanted them recognized for it.

God bless, Beth : )

That looks like great fun. Nothing like that round here though.

I have to say I can't praise North Cornwall NHS or council enough. So far everything we have needed or wanted has been there. It is a shame that we only here about the bad stuff.

Congratulations to your social worker and well done you for nominating them.
And the do-nutting looks way fun!

Just think Jen, the more you go out and expand C's world, the more you stretch everyone's expectations of what is possible for all our kids. And you stretch the awareness of the people you meet out too.

THAT is do-nutting? I was picturing you guys going down the rapids in inner tubes!! Silly, because I don't think you-all have a lot of whitewater stuff out that way.

This looks like a great activity, and I'm so glad C went again, after the first run (and what a run that must have been for you).

I love the photo! It really captured the fun.

You know how much I appreciate you recognizing your Social Social Worker. I know it means a great deal to your Worker. So glad you found one that is so helpful and connects with you and C.

Have a good weekend!!

Do-nutting must be a great time! But I can imagine how you felt the next day.

So glad you've had good experiences with Social Workers, and you certainly have the right attitude about giving them the praise they deserve. Hope the outcome of your nomination is what you want.

C is fortunate to have a mom like you. And I know that he is your whole world.

What a fabulous day! Do-nutting! A great idea - so pleased you both had fun. It is wearing, but so worth it.

Congrats on the award ceremony - I read the post from the social worker which was really informative because nobody sees that side of it.

Good luck next month - dont forget your lippy for the cameras...! RMx

Never heard of Donutting before. Nothing like it in these here parts.

I managed to get my lad go-karting. I had to book a short session with no other karters to show him how to do it (eg, not to keep his foot on the throttle all the time). He mastered it more quickly than I anticipated & now he wants to do it all the time! And it's expensive!

That looks like great fun and it's great that you found something C likes!

What a lovely thing for you to do nominating your social worker for that award - I hope she wins. :)

Jeni said...

I think both of these things are really fantastic -that you nominated your social worker for the award and it was accepted and also, that you got "C" to participate in the 'do-nut' activity. It is such a great feeling when you see that they have taken another step -regardless of how big or how small it may be -in adjusting, honing the fine tuning of their senses in the process.
Keep up the great work and hang on to the good and understanding social worker too!

I agree with you that many social workers (and educators, in our case) work tirelessly, and often get a bad rap. Kudos to you and yours!

I showed my son the donuts video clip, guess where he wants to go next time we visit the UK? I know for the first run I will have to go down as well, you will hear me scream in Portsmouth, the things we do for our children !!

I am happy you have nominated your social worker, it is true we need to give recognition where due, it is not easy the other side.

Where my sister has been working for the last 9 years a new private group has taken over, seems all staff with 5+ years of service are no longer in flavour. It's a long long story, she has been given a two lined letter saying goodbye. My sister has several opportunities with other organisations as she is well respected and liked, especially by the service users.

However as she says, it is not just her that is going through the heartbreak of saying goodbye, the service users are disturbed and upset by these dramatic and abrupt changes, I would go as far as to say that some have had to have special counselling.

Yet "liveability" (the new owners) say on paper !! their priority is for the service user?! are they really? I guess it is a sign of the times, balance books first.

How wonderful of you to do that for your social worker! I know that there are many hard working, caring social workers, who suffer because of the publicity the bad ones get. To be recognized for doing a good job is awesome. That you all may get filmed is a bonus!

I'm glad you were only a little sore after the do-nutting and that you both enjoyed the outing.

This just looks like so much fun that it makes me so happy to think of you and C getting to do it. I know it is hard work for you and that there may have been pains the following day but it is so good to see that you find it worth it. I have to give you credit for providing your son with the most full life that you possibly can. And kudos to you for giving credit where it is due regarding your social worker(s). So many times we are quick to complain but not so quick to give credit. Congratulations on having the nomination accepted and I can't wait to hear more about the ceremony next month! :)

I can't tell you how great it is that you get C out and about. Many parents that I work with just isolate themselves and their child to avoid dealing with stressful situations. Which is not healthy for anyone involved.

Are you pleased with the new arrangements in place? I truly hope so. You two definitely deserve peace of mind and comfort of heart.

Sending you big hugs my friend

That looks like so much fun! I don't think we have anything like that around here though.

That's wonderful of you to recognize your social worker! I know finding someone to help be your child's advocate can sometimes be like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Oh yeah I can relate with this instead of wearing the kid out it's us who get so tired! I dunno where they get all those energy from.

You are lucky to have an awesome social worker. I'm sure we have some around but not for the same cause you and I are fighting for. Good luck to our cause and hope someday our kids will live in harmony with the rest of the world.

Do-nutting looks fun and it looks like I'll get a lot of body ache there too.

I'd never heard of do-nuting, very cool. Sounds like a good outlet to expend some energy anyway. As far as your advocacy, I should tell you that before I ever started reading your blog I knew very little about autism. You continue to educate people around the world, one at a time. Be proud of that!
