What's in my bag?

Motherhood for Dummies asked me what was in my hand bag.
Not that long ago i used to have what seemed like a Tardis for a bag. Being the mother of an autistic child you have to be prepared for the more unusual eventualities.
As you know C doesn't speak, but he also doesn't ask for anything like needing to go to the loo. I have to promt him, and of course i don't always get my timing right. So i used to have to carry spare clothes. (My timing is better now) Incredibly sometimes he wont go to the loo for days at a time, no matter how much i give him to drink.
Yes i used to carry a swimming float. Any ideas as to why? Its light, portable and great for slipping in between Cs head and the surface he was headbanging on. (When small i would use my hand or foot, or bodily lift him away.) Now he wears a helmet.
Pecs.....ooops wrong pic
Pecs, i carried Pec symbols about for years, just in case he would start using them.
And to some places i would take a portable DVD player.
And of course a supply of chopsticks!
Before the days of C having his fingers permanently in his ears he would never been seen without a chopstick which he would tap on his face, but occasionally they would fly off never to be seen again.

Those days are behind me now and thankfully my bag has now shrunk. It also had to shrink because of my injury to my leg i can no longer carry heavy things.

So now i just carry the necessities, our disabled bus and train pass, a carers card in case something happens to me. (I used to have an Alert card - but never used it) A Radar key - for public disabled toilets. Phone. Wet wipes for tomato Ketchup emergencies (he prefers to eat with his fingers) and he also will on occasion smear when out, but we wont go into that! Sudoku book and pen, notepad in case i have a blog brainwave - and a crystal. And for some reason i still have a chopstick in there!
What unusual things do you carry in your bag?

OH what fun! what's in me bag??? All the usual girl type stuff... purse, credit cards, EFTPOS card, coffee shop loyalty cards, pens, paper, lippy, ear rings, Artificial sweetner, Headache pills, phone charger (essential), girly 'products'.... and a darn sharp pocket knife (for taking cuttings from gardens) and a fire starter! Well you just never know when you may need to start a fire on a desert island! It will work even when wet, it's made of this amazing metal that you just scrape and it causes a spark. TOO COOL.

Whoops, forgot the phone! But then, it's usually in me hand, almost never in the bag!

Plenty of tissues!!! (Blood noses are common for Jack!)
'Disinfectant wipes' - I have children who won't go near other people's toilets / public toilets unless the surface has been cleaned there and then!!
Pens (strangely I never seem to have any paper), lippy, purse and hand cleanser (my children's influence again)... my phone and sunglasses.

Then of course there is the 'outing bag' that we carry... needless to say it has every other conceivable thing in it that 2 children could possibly ever need to keep them clean and entertained when out!

Oh yes, I often keep a crystal in my bag too. xx

I don't use a bag if I can help it. If it doesn't go in my pocket, it doesn't go!

Your blog should be required reading for all parents, not just parents of autistic children. BTW, thx for slipping my pic in for the pecs shot.

Hi.. Thanks for your comment! :-)

Wow, you are a Mother of an autistic child, thats awesome! And by the sounds of it you are a wonderful one too!

I have met a beatiful little girl who is autistic, she is truly amazing.

Ooooo Great post! I don't actually have a bag these days because I don't get out much! But I do carry a Sudoku book with me every where, I LOVE Sudoku!!! But I always forget a damn pen!!! :-) xx

Echoing Phil, this post should be required reading for parents! I don't have kids...so my two backpacks have assorted hiking/cycling items in them. :)

I've been enjoying these peeks into women's handbags (they seem to be so protective of them all the time).

Chopsticks? Ok... what do you need those for, apart from the obvious which isn't done on the road...

And, where'd you get that pic of me and my pecs?

Being a guy- no handbag, just a wallet!

I don't think I have anything unusual in my bag. Just the usual women's things plus my inhaler for when I get asthma in the spring and summertime and I always leave it in there, all through the fall and wintertime also. For some reason, I also have a nail clipper. I don't know why I do, because I don't see me clipping my nails in public.

Jen said...

Lots and lots of tissues, pens (which explains why I can never find them at home), inhalers and allergy medication, my "list" (for groceries, which are never-ending, old beat up wallet, keys from every place I've ever lived in (apparently...I should have keys for 4 houses at the moment as the emergency back-up for friends, but I must have 30 keys on my keychain), my cell phone which I always forget about because I'm so deaf that I can't hear it, cough drops, candies to keep the kids quiet if necessary, lipstick which I always forget to put on, a few drawing supplies for one of my daughters (which usually involves the "list", a book which is always too large for my purse, and the toys (or hairballs) that the cats thoughtfully leave for me unexpectedly.

I need a suitcase instead of a purse.

I guess I have nothing of intrest in my bag. I do not like bags any more. Junior does pretty well now.

Mostly it is just my wallet, glasses and a load of ink pens.Oh yeah...what looks like an entier pharmacy! It is usually full of therapy reports that do not get filed until I have no room left for other things.

I love this post. Reading the comments is quite entertaining too. I always carry M's belly medications incase she goes into a migraine. Lots of fidget pencils because M always wants to be writing or fidgeting with the pencil tops. I like to have candy at all time but I know that is being naughty.

I must say you probably had a very large bag when you had to carry the swim float. What a good idea.

A key for disabled restrooms. That is brilliant. My bags have also shrunk. I love it!

There's nowt unusual about having a crystal in your bag, Casdok! I have one in my pockets too.

Pecs; I tried them with Amy but it seemed to confuse her even more. They do use them at school but for reason her logic just won't alternate.

First of all I just want to again reiterate how amazing I think you are. The mother of the two boys that I work with keeps her car stocked with stuff like this too.

My bag has, wallet, phone, book etc. Nothing unusual!

In my handbag, very little, wallet, diary, gloves (my hands get very cold), lipsyl etc, but when we go out we also have another bag that goes with us which has things like pills, wipes, the wheelchair raincoat (which is huge), drinks and straws (if I have spasms I can't hold a drink to take pills!!

I carry the usual stuff, wallet, cell phone, sun glasses, huge bottle of Excedrin, Melanie's medicine, my planner but I also have a crystal and a smooth beach stone from the chesapeake bay. I picked it up once, from a walk, when I was pondering about life. I have another small stone, a friend gave me, to symbolize our friendship (she is my rock). I love small, pretty stones and crystals. They have such deep meaning to me.
XOXO

I don't have anything interesting in my bag just lip gloss, wallet with credit cards/etc, and lots and lots of old receipts and garbage but maybe your post will inspire me to clean out my purse.
One thing I did find amusing...Nobody I know here in U.S. would know what a tardis or doctor who is but that is one of my husbands favorite shows. Adrian loves the theme song at the beginning of the new ones and Glen set his cell phone to have that for a ring tone.

Get Off My Lawn! said...

I carry no bag. But if my bag was a Tardis I would carry an eight foot long multicoloured scarf and the number to a plastic surgeon who specialized in noses. I loved the good Doctor back then.

You remind me of my sister-in-law...you're both moms of autistic kids and you never cease to amaze me. Love the crystal.

My grandson has chopsticks in the back of my car so that he can pretend to be a gorilla when Phil Collins comes on the CD.

I am a pen thief. I have a fear of being without, so whenever I see one lying about it goes in the front pocket of my bag...which is now very heavy.
I love the tardis bag that you have a picture of...does it really exist? I can just imagine walking into a french supermarket with one.

hey! don't get personal about stuff in MY bag! :O lol

"ooops wrong picture", it looks like a pic of me when I was younger LOL

I have a bag too that I carry with me to work and meetings. I got batteries for my hearing-aids, lifesaver breathmints, glasses cleaner, band-aid, advil, papers, newspaper, book, pens, highlighter and calender.

Besides all the usual stuff, I carry a spare G-Tube and lots of loose beads in my bag. Ashley loves stringing beads on her many 'sculptures', and I have been without a spare G-tube one time to many to not always have one with me.

anything that is in my hand and doesn't have a logical immediate home ends up in my bag. right now that includes - meds for the cat, xtra batteries, flier from take-out place, a box of crayons and ride tickets for the carousel.

this list will change tomorrow :)

and I agree with everyone who said your blog is required reading.

I LOVE YOUR TARDIS BAG!!!!! Squishy heartx10!!! Growing up, I was madly in love with Tom Baker and his scarf.

And I'm jealous of your Sudoku book.

Thanks for the look into your bag!

I don't have a handbag, but I do have a canvas bag I use for shopping. And also the lads' double and single buggies have bag sopace underneath them, so a fair amount of stuff gets in there. At the minute in the double buggy there are some advertising leaflets from the newspaper, several megablocks, a swim nappy, one of Tom's nappies, half a packet of wipes, some bottle tops, a woolly hat, a wellington boot, The Murder of Roger Acroyd, The Complete Short Stories of Hercule Poirot, some weetabix wrappings and a ball.

I saw that Motherhood for Dummies tagged you and I so wanted to know what was in your bag, too! I'm so glad that you played along. I think all moms have wipes no matter what ages their kids are! I have girly stuff but I also carry around essentials in case of an emergency. Let's just say that I wouldn't be lost in a forrest for long! I also carry a crystal or 12! Thanks for the accidental pecs picture! You made my day AGAIN!! Thanks and hugs!

The most important thing for me to carry is my lipstick - I feel naked without it. But normally, my purse has a wallet, cell phone, Tic Tacs, eyeglass wiper, cheque book, pen, mirror, sunglasses, and a few tissues just in case. Pretty average things.

whimsical brainpan said...

The only unusual things I carry in my purse are an eyeglass repair kit and a device that helps me pull zippers (for whwn my fingers won't cooperate or it's a difficult zipper).

Well, since I don't carry a bag, my love, I have nothing to share in this regad. But, I think your idea of a 'Tardis' bag is wonderful. Have it patented.

Up till J was 12 y/o or so, my bag was enormous if we were going walking. I always choose a pocketbook that has lots of zipper compartments - even to this day. If we were going out on driving trip, the van WAS the bag. I carried Audio books, extra headphones, hand held Tetris like video games(pre-Nintendo), snack pack cookies, bottled water, diapers, extra clothes/jackets/baseball caps, shoes and socks (J loved PUDDLES!)

Since J wasn't potty trained until nearly four, I had a port-a-potty put in the van (esp for long trips) so he wouldn't forget and wet.

Now that he is 25 (26 on 5/8), he carries a multitude of things in his pockets, in his car (tissues, bottle water, paperback books, maps printed from Mapquest to get around neighborhood, extra clothes, extra jacket, extra everything).

He hoards things so that his room looks like a packrat's room. He is a pacer and his room has one area that is a pacing path. No one walks on it!

I think bags are a necessity whether your child is autistic or not....the items are just more unique to our children.

Dr.John said...

Well at least you don't have to carry as much. I don't have a bag but carry a small tank of oxygen wherever I go.
Because of your blog I have been learning a great deal about autism. This morning we introduced my daughter who interned at an autism clinic to the lady in the church with an autistic child. Then I just listened ( which is hard for me).

I carry a highlighter in my purse. I'm not sure why but it's right up there with my Sharpie.

CS said...

That was a ton of stuff you used to have to carry around. These days, I have a very small purse which hold credit nad stroe discount cards, a little cash, driver's license, a few business cards a a comb. That's it.

I have deoderant

You sound like a wonderful mom.

Although people still tell me my purse is humongous and that I must be carrying rocks, I have downsized it so much. At one time, it was hurting my back so I had to.

I have a bag to carry the diaper bag. Something's wrong with that picture. And wipes for ketchup? I'm right there with you!

C is sure lucky to have a momma who thinks of him always! :-)

I love "visiting," my friend. I always learn something new from you everyday. :-)

Yummy can I have the first pecs pic in my bag. lol

In my bag are keys, lots of pen and paper to keep the kids busy, a pair of panties for Monkette (yes in my purse), various toys that have been stored in there, Monkette's vibrating teether, checkbook, tons of receipts I have yet to clear out, and I too have chopsticks from my sushi lunch last week (I kept them for an activity with the kids).

Mrs. C said...

I've been thinking about how strange it is to have a crystal in your bag until I realized I myself have a mini-King James in my bag... for all those emergencies in which a mini-King James would be useful LOL! (Gotta make all those converts at the local grocery store, you see. Happens every week in the produce aisle.)

I also have two different sizes of diapers in my bag, a wallet, a cell phone and a big ziplock bag full of loyalty cards I rarely use. But if I'm going somewhere I'm too cheap to go without 'em.

Fab post! In addition to the typical stuff, make up, purse, medical information card etc that I always have, I also always have a tube of ky jelly and rubber gloves in my bag. BG

Odat said...

Wow, thanks for sneaking in that eye candy shot!! hehe....
I've got all the typical "stuff" in my bag, nothing unusual. But it's heavy!

Peace

Funny, I found a large tub of Play Doh in the bottom of mine this morning. It was rock hard so it must have been there for years:-)

BBQ Sauce and taco sauce...for the times when Toddler will not eat without it. (Yeah, the weird looks from people who don't have a child with Aspergers are silly.) Then my huge ball of reciepts (you never know when you might want to see the reciept for the taco you bought last year, or the coffee you drank last month) and 40 outdated lipsticks.

Thats about it - other than the phone wallet and ipod - sometimes there is knitting in there too, but only when I know we are going to be somewhere for a LONG time.

WesterWitch/Headmistress said...

Usual stuff, phone, money, torch. Always carry a notebook for writing ideas - has to be a Pukka Pad though.

I love you blogs Casdok - you put such a lot of time and effort into them and they are all so unusual and thought provoking.
