Unlawfull wedding

Update
Kory McFarren, whose girlfriend authorities say spent nearly two years in a bathroom in their house, sitting on the toilet so long that the seat adhered to her body, has been charged with mistreatment of a dependent adult.

Full story here, but as yet there isn't a lot.

Another interesting story that caught my eye yesterday;

An autistic man married a Bangladeshi bride over the telephone, a court heard.
The 26-year-old man, described as "highly vulnerable", underwent a Muslim wedding ceremony to a woman he had never met who was found for him by his parents.
But yesterday three of the country's most senior judges ruled that the marriage was not legal in the UK as he was unable to give consent under English law.
The court was asked to rule after Westminster Social and Community Services Department stepped in.
It has provided care for the man, named only as IC in court, since the age of four.
The court was told the wedding was to allow his bride, referred to as NK, to obtain a visa and join him in Britain.
Under sharia law and the law of Bangladesh the marriage, was valid.
Lawyers for the parents, who were originally from Bangladesh but live in England, argued that it should be recognised in English law.
But the Court of Appeal said IC was unable to give valid consent to marriage under English law and said it had been "potentially abusive".

It sounds more like the parents get money or some sort of benefit from allowing this. I read the article and thought... this is different from marrying off a seven-year-old GIRL only in that the young man has some sort of legal protection in Britain from being exploited. (Some.)

I'm a big xenophobe in that I find some of these practices disturbing. When I had G, I saw the insurance was billed for a circumcision I never got for him. I called the insurance company to tell them G never got circumcized because we're Gentiles. It wouldn't make any difference to MY pocket at the time b/c my insurance was great. It was Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

The lady on the phone was very nice and explained that the bill was for MY circumcision (someone must have coded something wrong LOL!!). What I'd have to do to make sure the claim is paid in full is explain to them that I'm a Muslim in writing.

SO, I asked, you guys would PAY for genital mutilation?? Are you serious??

Yes. They were. Being culturally tolerant in my opinion can be taken way too far.

well, casdok, it looks like you are going to have to get off that toilet now that C is home again. I had been wondering about the prolific writing you've been doing, but now I know.

I'm really glad to hear that the guy is being prosecuted, what he did was totally inhumane leaving her there for that long, I could understand if she had been on the loo for a week, but 2 years is ridiculous. I hope that the judge gives him a decent punishment.

I have to say, if you want a little peace and quiet, sitting on a john is a good way to have people leave you alone!

Makes the comments by the Archbishop of Canterbury not long ago about "adopting" some of sharia law in the UK even more scary. It is a very complex issue.

I personally cannot understand how some one could consent to be married over a phone!

And if that boyfriend of the toilet lady was not ill/vulnerable/disabled himself (meaning he had not the capacity to recognise when help was needed or access it - that was my original concern) then he deserves all he gets.

Much prefer the sand.

Hi Casdok!
I support the British law that says the marriage is not legal. Frighteneing what is allowed in other places.

Happy Easter to you and C :-)

Love Muddie X

I think there must be much more to the toilet sitter story. Sorrow, depression, mental illness, and people in crisis don't make for good morbid headlines so we will probably never know,"The rest of the story!"

Spinning the mouse around on the walk in the sand made me dizzy.

The wedding reminds me of my father-in- law 38 years ago with that damn shotgun!

I heard about the toilet story. So sad that he never bothered to get her help.

I don't think the marriage should be recognized either. Over the phone?

The sand would be divine today!

It annoys me that people insist other laws (i.e. sharia law) should be recognised in Britain. We have British law that anyone living here should abide by, if they don't want to then they should go live somewhere else. As for the poor woman sitting on a toilet seat for 2 years - it's unbelievable! :(

Love the walk on the beach. :)

I just barly heard about that bathroom girl just yesturday. How sad. I couldn't imagine having a problem like that.

i don't see how the bf can be charged if she refused to 'get off the pot', except perhaps he should have notified authorities...

as for the wedding, i guess time will tell if it will become legal in ol blighty....

I had heard about the bathroom girl.

I don't think that marriage should be considered valid.

That is horrible about the girl on the toilet.

I've never heard of a marriage over the phone!

Emperor and Elf look like they're having a blast!

I wanted to see the ocean but never managed to get that far! wah!

I love the Flat Stanleys and can remember one of the primary teachers doing that at my school. I don't think they went as far as England or Australia, though.

I agree that there MUST be more to that story about the girl on the toilet. Were they mildly intellectually handicapped? (Is that the PC term now?)

Growing up near Cape Cod, MA... I loved walking on the beach and walking on the sand.

Now, that toilet thing, that man should be sitting on the toilet for life in jail. I like that for punishment.

To be honest, how can ANY wedding be valid over the phone???

Angela said...

A wedding over the phone would be very informal, unless they were video phones. I guess you must also speak properly.
Good grief!

Marriage over the phone is a new one to me! I'd say the other posters that commented on some sort of financial incentive for the parents was likely in place.

You know, regarding the woman on the toilet, I've read a couple of accounts where it says that the boyfriend might have had some kind of mental disability as well.

What totally disgusts me is that what there is of her "family" is calling for his blood, say they tried to visit her, got as far as the bathroom door when SHE told them to "go away", etc...

But not one of them ever called the sheriff or police to do a wellness check on her. In two years. I think there's some blame to go around.
