I will be very interested to see the answers tommorrow, as I live by some of these rules! (Not the pregnancy/standing up one though... I did know about that one!)

I might be able to tell my mum that she was wrong with alot of these!

Cheers

Uh oh.....there goes my excuse for not shoveling snow with wet hair.....

Dangit.

All false. Well... all of the non-autistic ones I have read about and know they are false, I am presuming you added the autistic ones to follow the same pattern.

I drop in every day to see what you have posted - and every day I go away with my brains rattling.

You have a very interesting blog!

A lot of those have recently been proved to be baloney BUT I still go demented if children or grand-children go out with wet hair.
We used to be told that if you washed your hair when you had the curse you would go mad. Which no doubt accounts for my being a bit barmy.

Looking forward to the answers!

About the chewing gum - my mother always said if we swallowed chewing gum we'd trump bubbles! :)

Please let the one about turkey be true...I'll know what to feed the kids every night!

I really like this batch of questions. Some I know and live by, some I don't. I look forward to seeing the answers. I think I'll be sending some of these questions-answers to my parents to help keep the conversation about autism going.

Christy said...

Betcha most of them are false. Though I know the ingredient in turkey truly does make you drowsy. Yep, Tryptophan, the natural sedative.

Joy said...

Some of these I know are not true, some hmmm? I was always told about the 7 years for the chewing gum. We shall see!

Well I know I can answer all the ones about autism false in reguards to my own son. He is very loving and affectionate and can communicate quite well.

I always have sex standing up...but I do it with a girl. Maybe that's what's keeping me from getting preggers?

Great list! Looking forward to the answers tomorrow!

People should drink at least eight glasses of water a day: I don't know, I'm fine with 2 or 3 a day...but sometimes I drink more and can sleep better. Hmm.

We use only 10% of our brains: That's the part we can tell the function of. Other brain parts are either uncharted territory yet, or are atrophied because we don't learn enough. Nerds have more active grey matter areas :-P

Hair and fingernails continue to grow after death: No, just the skin shrinks around them.

Bad parenting causes autism: Bullshit. You're the best parent I know, and Mom does pretty well too.

Shaving hair causes it to grow back faster, darker, or coarser: True. That's why I gave up shaving my legs; I'm naturally hairier than average anyway...

Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight: Well, I read in every kind of light, and my eyes are -10... but that can be for genetical reasons as well.

People with autism are unable to feel emotions or develop personal attachments: Not true. The majority are just afraid of people because the abuse they get. And everybody can feel emotions, they're the primary aspect of life. However, some autistics can separate thoughts and emotions very well in order to keep thinking straight (see the Curious Incident of the Dog In The Night-time).

Eating turkey makes people especially drowsy: I've eaten that, but experienced no drowsiness. Could be just proprioceptional malfunction though.

Mobile phones create considerable electromagnetic interference in hospitals: Not true. The newer cells use a different frequency than X-rays and heart monitors.

Autistic people can't show affection: Bullshit. We just have our own ways.

Coffee will cure a hangover: No, it cures drunkenness. Hangover can be made disappear by drinking again. (I have an alcoholic father, so I know.)

Don't cross your eyes - they'll get stuck that way: Another things adults tell kids to scare them. Just like that tetanus thing.. I'm a cutter for 5 years and no stripe has begun to crawl up to my heart.

Eating chocolate gives you acne: Eating greasy things and being under stress does, but not chocolate. Unless you're allergic though.

Autistic people can’t communicate at all: LOL! That's absolutely false. Look at your blogroll and you'll see it :-)

Feed a cold, starve a fever?: Don't know... didn't have a cold since I was 3, and my fever usually mean dehydration and/or sensory overload...

If you have sexual intercourse whilst standing up you cannot get pregnant: Well, it makes the way harder for the little critters, but they can survive inside for 2 days, so you'd better use a condom or something like that to be sure.

Autism is a mental illness: Nope. It's a neurological difference. Hannibal Lecter is mentally ill, Albert Einstein is not.

Cracking your knuckles will cause arthritis: I don't know about cracking, but typing can do that - especially if you do it for 8 hours straight. Been there done that.

Wait an hour after eating before swimming: Why? It can even be dangerous, as swimming makes you hungry without you knowing that. I fainted after swimming 9 hours in the river because I my sugar level was in the cellar; however in the water, I didn't notice anything.

Autistic Children cannot learn: False again.

If you go outside with wet hair, you'll catch a cold: Depends on the strentgh on your defence system. I dove in a river last February, and didn't catch anything.

Autistic people are incapable of love: False. Don't worry, your C loves you back :-)

Affection and smiling at you means a child is not autistic: No, it means the child has learned to mimic NT ways of showing love.

Chewing gum takes seven years to pass through your digestive system: What, it sticks in? I never swallowed mine, though...

Cheri said...

I have yet to meet an autistic person who didn't develop attachments to their parents/siblings and, yes, even friends. One of my greatest pet peeves is that because an autistic child doesn't respond to mommy and daddy the way mommy and daddy expect them to, mommy and daddy decide no love is there.

"People with autism are unable to feel emotions or develop personal attachments" is false, but then, they all are, aren't they?

BTW, thanks for the link!

They are all false I believe.
There are so many different types and degrees of Autism. My wife has 2 little cousins with one form and my nephews half sister has Asburgers and they are all just as different and special as any other kids.

While some I think I know, others will be a learning experience...something everyone can benefit from. I look forward to tomorrow.

At least I know the answers to all the Autism ones. FALSE!

Tanya Brown said...

All false, I believe. (I'm not sure about the turkey one, but given that the rest look false, it probably is too.)

The sad thing is, even people who should know better such as physicians, will spew out unsubstantiated stuff like "drink eight glasses of water a day".

Don't even get me started on the old saw "no two snowflakes are alike".

i think they are all false or at the very elast misleading--whiole cracking your knuckles isnt good for them, it doesnt cause arthritus.

now I'm off to visit my friend who eats metal and glass.

dykewife said...

crossing your eyes may not make them stay that way, but it stretches out muscles that shouldn't and may make the eye somewhat "lazy" so that when one is tired (or drunk) the eye will lean inward.

I am going to guess that these are ALL false!!!

Interesting. "BAD Parenting causes autism" has to be a myth or I'll get rattled with worry about my parenting skill.

How funny. Too bad I can't hand this sheet (minus the sex thing LOL!) to everyone who expresses surprise that my children have autism because they can carry on a conversation and look "normal."
