The power of chocolate

Did you know there was waste chocolate?! Not only that but it ends up as landfill!

So 2 young men decided to put this waste chocolate to use.

Two British adventurers set off on an expedition to west Africa in a lorry powered by biodiesel made from waste chocolate.
The pair are took 2,000 litres of bio-diesel made from 4,000kg of chocolate misshapes, the equivalent of 80,000 chocolate bars, to fuel their adventure.

Recent studies have suggested that cocoa or dark chocolate may possess certain beneficial effects on human health. Well if it can power a truck....

The two Brits behind this stunt are, of course, trying to bring attention to biodiesel, a renewable resource that generates lower carbon emissions than fossil fuels.
However some charities are complaining about wasting food as biofuels when there are people starving in the world.

Did you know:

Chocolate is one of the most popular foods around and is highly unlikely to ever go out of fashion.

The word 'Chocolate' comes from the Aztec word, 'cacahuatl' or ‘xocolatl’. This means 'bitter water'.

The Mayans and Aztecs believed that the Cocoa Beans originated from Paradise and would bring wisdom and power to anyone consuming them.

The Aztecs mixed Chocolate with Chilies, Cornmeal, and Hallucinogenic Mushrooms!

Ah yes but bearing in mind the Aztecs also performed human sacrifice could one see chocolate as an incitement to violence. All for Bio fuels and anyone who can put waste products to good use. Isnt it alwasy the same some ruddy do gooder getting twitchy, for goodness sake are they saying that they would have collected the choclate mishapes adn sent them to Africa to feed the starving masses? Not a good idea. Perhaps if charities cleaned up their own houses first they might be in a better position to look down on efforts of others!
And here endeth the sermon!

Having enjoyed chocolate for many many years - I've now learned some things about it that I didn't know ;)

I have heard of the health benefits from cocoa however. Really dark chocolate in moderation is supposed to be good for you.

I like chocolate - but I try to eat it in moderation. Makes me healthy, right?

I LOVE chocolate! I have a craving for the best quality Belgian kind. Started years ago when my mum bought me some Godiva..I never looked back. Could be an addict as I used to work in a Belgian chocolate shop in Covent Garden years ago...and eat all day long! Had so much energy...but awful skin!

I just saw a television show about three guys trying to make it across the US in a van powered by vegetable oil.

They have to stop and beg fast food and Chinese restaurants to let them take waste oil from the barrels kept out back behind the restaurants.

Amazing!

As it's so good for me I'll just have to continue eating it every day won't I? Especially at 4 o' clock when I get the craving?

I love chocolate. I once fell into a chocolate river in some guy's chocolate factory. Out of the five of us I was the first one to go, but I lovely song was sung in my behalf as I parted ways. ;)

My goodness! Such waste! They should have sent it my way. I'd love to eat more of that delicious thing, but alas it packs a lot of pounds on too quickly. Hmm...if I go for a walk to the store and eat it walking home, will I burn off the calories?

I could run for miles on Green and Black.....and I think the Aztecs had the right idea. Funny how their recipes never really made it into Delia Smith, isn't it?

I love that a car was able to run on chocolate. If only people would listen to all the possibilities.

Myself, I'm a shameless chocoholic. I just had some a little bit ago. :)

Just dropped in from David's to say hi - I was in Surrey, now in Kent.

Great post; remember reading xylothianines (?) in chocolate replicate the feel good factor, or something along those lines....

interesting...
theres a fellow here who powers his car with left over oil (from restaurants that fry foods)

little confused though...
why not use the chocolate- are they suggesting we send it to starving africans??
how about being less wasteful -
interesting that no one had anything to say about how much food is thrown out in the western world (used to work in a grocery store- the waste was shameful -ex. the store rather throw away thousands of dollars in day old fish every year and call it a tax loss rather than steam it and have to sell it for less)
