Oh I LOVED this post, it is fun to look at things from different perspectives!

You do start early!
We do take so many things for granted dont we? As in..an old person must be helplesss or useless etc. Everyone has some feature which is often surprising.

Really interesting - and a great lesson in perspectives, as DJ has already said!

Chicken tikka masala isn't a traditional indian dish, it was devised for the brits. But I guess everyone knows that one.

I didn't know a peanut wasn't a nut!

Ahh who's a clever tart for compiling that list then? And shit it was hot here today... sorry to hear you were cold! Give me warm any day!

PI said...

Yes I also am a little wiser. Now all I have to do is retain that info. Fat chance!

didnt know about a prairie oyster!
did you ever read Dr. Suess' Horton Hears a Who?
Hortons ongoing statement is "a person is a person no matter how small"... we can take that adjective out though and add autistic, or poor, or overweight, or...well whatever.
the easiest way to target a group of people you hate is to make them somehow less than human, then...any treatment is acceptable
ok...so I'm rambling on
:-)
prairie oysters...who knew?

You are always so insightful. Just to prove that I read ALL the way through that list, I have to say my favourite is #25.

God bless you and C.

Oh, some I knew. Last one I have always known.

I remember learning about the sweetmeat one when I was younger. I was rather disgusted.

Great list!

And thanks for mentioning shortbread...I'm going to take that as a sign from the Universe that I should have cookies for breakfast this morning :-)

Well, that was quite an education and a lesson as to how we take things (we hear) for granted. Thanks.

Great post! Didn't know about the cucumber being a fruit. A tomato is also a fruit and not a vegetable. Most people probably know that.

Peace!

You always have the most fabulous things on your blog. I've been compiling stuff to send to various idiot family members when we get Liam's official diagnosis and this? This is so going in the grouping. Just perfection.

I loved this list. I knew about half of them. It's a good representation of how we take the identity of things at face value and don't do enough to learn about what they really are. One that I have is that a robin isn't a robin. It's a type of thrush. So many look at it by the name it's given but don't know anything about what it really is. Sadly, so many people look at autism the same way and don't anything more about it.

Here's one to add to your list. A gooey duck is not a duck, its a clam. :-D

And women aren't just women, we're geniuses!

A little lesson in perspective taking is always welcome.
I should probably rack my brain for an addition but it's too early.

not to be picky, but of course i'm going to be...

the bald eagle *is* bald in that bald is an archaic word for "white". the eagle has a white head ergo bald eagle.

prairie oysters are "harvested" when the new calves are brought together with the herd for branding. they are neutered at the same time. i'm not sure how old they are when it's done though.

on that note, despite living on the canadian prairies all my life, i've never indulged in this particular treat.
